CARMA Launches New Program to Assist Owners with Safely Retiring Thoroughbreds

CARMA is pleased to announce the development of a new service for owners and trainers to assist in the placement of their Thoroughbreds in need of retirement.  Through the generosity of the Santa Anita Park After-Care Program – an initiative to support racehorse retirement created by owner-breeder Frank Stronach – CARMA has created the CARMA Placement Program.  This new program will facilitate the transition of horses from the racetrack to an approved CARMA Aftercare Partner (non-profit benefactors of CARMA grant funds) for placement in their forever home.

The Placement Program will work directly with owners and trainers to transition horses admitted to the program to Winners’ Circle Ranch in Bradbury, CA to be assessed, treated if necessary, and then placed with the appropriate aftercare partner.  The aftercare partner will provide rest, retraining and adoption, both, or permanent retirement, if necessary.

There are several prerequisites to be fulfilled before the horse will be admitted into the program.

  1. Owners or trainers must provide some information about the horse’s physical condition; we understand injury is a common reason for retirement.
  2. We cannot accept colts into the program but newly gelded horses, geldings, and fillies/mares are welcome.
  3. The Placement Program is funded by the Santa Anita Park After-Care Program so we require that your horse has run at Santa Anita, Hollywood Park, or Del Mar within the last six months or has been training with recorded works over that time span (showing the intent to run at one of those tracks).
  4. A donation of $500 is requested to help defray the transportation and administrative costs associated with each horse.

While we know many owners have the necessary connections and contacts to retire their horses directly, the Placement Program offers a safe and simple option for racehorse retirement.

We invite all owners and trainers to utilize the program for horses in need of retirement.  For more information please refer to the CARMA website: www.carma4horses.org/resources/carma-placement-program.   You can also contact the office at (626) 574-6654 or by email at PlacementProgram@carma4horses.org.
