CARMA Named a Semifinalist for the Dr. Tony Ryan Book Award

We’re proud to share some exciting news. What Horses Do After Racing: The Story of Good Carma by Jay Privman has been named a semifinalist for the 19th annual Dr. Tony Ryan Book Award, which honors outstanding Thoroughbred racing literature.

This award is one of the most generous in publishing, offering a $10,000 prize and recognizing books that celebrate the history, heart, and humanity of the horse racing world. From memoirs to fiction to children’s stories, this year’s semifinalists highlight the power of storytelling in the sport.

Our book was written to spark compassion and curiosity in young readers. With charming illustrations by PM Advertising, What Horses Do After Racing follows four retired racehorses as they imagine what their next careers might look like. Whether it’s jumping, dressage, therapy work, or trail riding, their dreams reflect the real journeys many Thoroughbreds take once they leave the track.

Every purchase of this book supports CARMA and the vital work of funding aftercare programs that give retired racehorses the second chapters they deserve.

We’re incredibly grateful to Jay Privman for lending his voice and heart to this project.

To be recognized among such a talented group of authors is an honor in itself. Finalists will be announced soon, and the winner will be celebrated this fall at Castleton Lyons in Kentucky.

Thank you for cheering us on and helping share the message that every horse’s aftercare journey matters. And don’t forget to snag your copy of What Horses Do After Racing on Amazon.
