As we reflect on 2023, the California Retirement Management Account (CARMA) proudly recognizes a year filled with remarkable achievements, furthering our mission to provide retired racehorses with the essential aftercare and support they need for fulfilling lives post-racetrack.
2023 Highlights for CARMA:
- CARMA celebrated its 15th year Anniversary with a logo rebrand.
- Awarded $451,000 in grants to 23 aftercare charity partners.
- Successfully placed 25 retiring racehorses through our Placement Program.
- Our annual CARMAthon fundraiser brought in $170,000, exceeding our goal of $150,000 raised.
- Continued participation in the Horse Power Coalition, striving to preserve and protect California’s rich equestrian culture.
- CARMA was granted a distribution of the Nancy Messineo Trust to help fund the CARMA Placement Program for retiring racehorses.
- Celebrated the achievements of CARMA graduates, including CARMA Grad Red King who exhibited at the Retired Racehorse Project and the Thoroughbred Classic Horse Show. He also made a celebrity appearance at the Breeders Cup as an aftercare ambassador.
- Hosted the annual Thoroughbred Classic Horse Show, showcasing the adaptability and grace of the Thoroughbred breed. 90 Thoroughbreds attended the show.
- CARMA teamed up with Paulick Report to discuss ensuring safe futures for racehorses amidst racing uncertainties, advocating for and providing owner resources for retirement options.
Looking Ahead to 2024
As we approach 2024, CARMA celebrates its 16th year of operation. To date, we have successfully placed over 425 horses through our Placement Program and have awarded more than $5.8 million in grants to our charity partners, significantly impacting the lives of retiring racehorses.
